Serum Insulin-like Growth Factor-Binding Protein(IGFBP) Profiles in Women without Ovarian Function

Abstract
This study was designed to determine serum insulin-like growth factor-Binding proteins (IGFBPs) profiles in women without ovarian function and to evaluate the effect of aging and absence of ovarain function on serum IGFBPs profiles. Serum IGFBPs
levels
in 18 normal premenopausal women, 34 surgically castrated women, 15 natural postmenopausal women and 13 patients with premature ovarain failure(POF) were measured by western ligand blotting and immunoprecipitation. No significant differences in
the
number and size of serum IGFBPs were noted among groups. Serum IGFBP-1 and IGFBP-3 levels in castrated women were significantly lower than those in normal premenopausal women of similar age(p<0.05). Natural postmenopausal women had significantly
high
IGFBP-2 levels in sera compared with castrated women (P<0.05). Serum IGFBP-2 proportions(expressed by percentage of IGFBP-2 fraction to total IGFBPs) in natural postmenopausal women were significantly higher than those in patients with
POF(p<0.05)
and
normal premenopausal women(p<0.005) respectively whereas serum IGFBP-3 proportions significantly lower than in patients with POF(p<0.05). Serum IGFBP-4 proportions were significantly lower in castrated women than in normal premenopausal women
(p<0.05).
There were no significant differences in the levels and proportions of serum IGFBPs between castrated women and patients with POF. These data suggest that there are unique profiles of serum IGFBPs in women without ovarian function and that serum
IGFBP
profiles are affected by ovarian function and aging.
